More of Hudson View

November 2010: "Discovering Victoria and A Hudson View was an accidental blessing: Having dabbled in poetry for awhile and, thereby, faced the rejections of many, Victoria (it seems) saw something others missed and gave my writings a chance to be read and critiqued by a wider audience.

Her proactiveness and commitment to the magazine are laudable enough.  But, it is the efforts she makes for her authors that makes her truly remarkable.  In no more profound way has this been demonstrated than by her welcome of my daughter's poem to A Hudson View.  Putting herself fully behind the piece, making sure the formatting was "perfect" and that the published editions reached us in time to get them ready as a surprise Christmas gift, Victoria was also admirably careful concerning the information made available on this first young author to be published in the magazine.

I have presented A Hudson View to several libraries and one university, and will continue to do what I can to spread the wings of a notable publication for aspiring poets."

November 2010:

Victoria, Just received it. I’m impressed: the look of it; the quality of subs. I’m proud to be included. Thank you, Stan Rosenberg

A Hudson View Poetry Digest Summer, 2010 Volume 5 Number 2 is a stellar issue!
I’ve not seen a collection of poems work so well together in a single poetry volume for a long time.
Congratulations to Skyline Publishing and its very fine poets, book reviewer and illustrator for this collective achievement.

I spent the last hour researching you and your publishing journey, finding, among other things, the wikipedia entry on Water Forest Press, essays by you, interviews, and a review in Feminist Review.  I work hard on my poems and I was concerned because some paperbound magazines today accept most anyone and make ignoble profit selling expensive copies to contributors.

I was absolutely wrong to even consider this possibility in your case. I did nothing but show how naïve and uninformed I am.   You are a true legend and a great publisher, who has demonstrated incredible fortitude.  You’re also a very talented writer and ‘interior designer’ when it comes to the style of your magazines.  The way you craft sentences, even for the mere purpose of conveying information, is most aesthetic and speaks to your ability. From what I can ascertain on the internet, yours are some of the most beautiful covers and zines I have seen.

This is a skill that is almost lost, I think; but the treasures you publish make all the argument anyone needs to keep this form of literary expression alive.

Victoria,

I just want to tell you how much I appreciate you as a Publisher and now a friend.  You have made things happen so fast for me by believing in me and making me believe in myself.  Skyline is the perfect name for your publication because "the sky is the limit" truly when you have someone who is willing to help you get started in such a very competitive area.  I will never forget what you have done for me, how easy to talk to and accessible you are, and how caring.  I had basically no credentials in writing when we met and you looked at the writing and not the lack of experience.  You really care about the work and the writer.  You are this way because you love what you do and you do it for that reason alone. This is evident.  I can't say enough good things about you.  You have changed my life.

               Sincerely,
                 Sandee Lyles

Literary House Review  9/2/07

Oh Victoria, what a beautiful surprise.  Thank you so much for allowing me to be part of this special publication.  Your unique awareness and dedication make poets like myself strive to raise to your impeccable standards.  I also like the fact that you tell us what you are looking for in each individual publication.  Sometimes we writers flounder, submitting material that is suitable, or applicable to what the publisher is looking for.  When we have guidance and suggestion we are able to zoom in and focus on a particular theme, which simplifies things on both ends.

As I've told you before, "you are the heart of this endeavor.  Imagine taking the time to produce beautiful publications using the work of unknown writers, blending their tones and concepts and adding a delicious dallop of art,  which culminates into into something we can all be proud to be part of.  This is a task beyond anything mere mortals can achieve. Surely you are heaven sent, the universal angel of writers and poets.  I thank the powers that be for sending you into my life.

Hi Victoria,  (9/10/07)

I hope you are doing well. I have received and read my copy of Skyline (the Fall issue) and I offer an abundance of kudos to you and your staff. The dynamics of design, literary content and artwork combine for a coffee tabletop delight, irresistible to pass up without a peek or to kick back and read.

Looking forward to receiving Skyline's Autumn Issues.  And thanks again, for creating
such a vast community where writers and artists can unite.  It is the number 1 place
to visit.  (In fact, these days, it's the only place I enjoy visiting!)

I got mine today, and I couldn't be more thrilled,Victoria.  They are beautiful.  I read most of the poetry but I haven't gotten to the stories yet.  The artwork is fantastic and as always you've put together various themes and artfully structured everything so that each piece is showcased.  I couldn't be happier with the entire magazine.  You are remarkable!!!

Patty Mager

Dear Victoria,

I received my copies of Skyline Magazine yesterday.  The poetry is
beautiful, intelligent and thought provoking.  I believe I will learn a
lot from these poems.  The physical magazine itself is so
professionally done, intriguing cover, nicely bound.  Overall one of
the best poetry magazines I have come across.  Keep up the great work.

Michael Frey

So gorgeous. The best yet. I am proud to have two poems in this volume. Everyone I show it to loves it.
    Best to you and congratulations.

I just wanted to take a minute to personally thank you for all the care and
attention that you put into the production of this issue of Skyline
magazine. The paintings look great.  The whole magazine looks wonderful.
Congratulations on a job well done!

Dear Victoria,

I want to thank you for all that you do for poets, writers, and artists.  You give us a venue where we can freely speak, listen, and share.  I know you work extremely hard to be able to do this for us and I know that you are certainly not doing it for monetary gain.  Your kind deeds reverberate and have a positive impact here on this planet.

I, for one, thank you for doing all that you do.  You are making the world a better place!

Love,

Christine Bruness,
Lyndhurst, NJ

Dear Victoria;

I can't wait to see the magazine! This is so exciting, I loved the issue that my mother gave me. Your eye for artwork and layout is wonderful. I used to work for a Sunday newspaper and did a lot of layout work, designed ads and set the pages for production so I know how time consuming it can be; not to mention the fact that you MUST have a good eye and a big dollop of talent if you want the end result to be good. Your efforts are stunning!
Again, congratulations of the newest issue of Skyline. You should be proud of what you've done. I know from personal experience that most of the print mags out there are no more than black and white chap books in 5x7 format. Nothing at all impressive. The last print mag I was published in was the size of yours but had no color and really crappy black and white images--as if the thing were copied repeatedly on a old, broken-down copier. What a difference! I never expected such beautiful work and I'm so proud to be counted among your 'artists'.

Be well and be happy
Kimber Cole, NY

Dear Victoria,

It’s an honour for me to be a part of your magazine and your contributor. By publishing my poems you helped me a lot to break through in America,

therefore I am very thankfull for that. Sincerely I wish that the following year becomes more succesfull for you than the previous one.

I will feel free to send more of my poems to you for consideration. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Best wishes,

    Milos Petrovic

Dear Victoria,

This is the first Skyline I have viewed, naturally because it
contained MY poem, but I wanted to say thank you, I appear amongst
so much good writing in such a well-presented magazine, I'm very
proud and also humbled.

You are doing a great job, and I trust that you get more exchange
in the way of praise, thanks, and goodies, because you certainly
deserve all of them !

Victoria,
The July/August issue of Skyline is beautiful! Thank you for including me in such a fine publication.
I love the Art of Birdie Shirley, so fanciful, so colorful. I especially liked the story P.I.N. by Fred Venturini, the paintings by Derek McCrea, and many poems, among them Vodka & Daisies by Zohara and Still by Lunah.
A wonderful read and beautiful artwork...
Pam MacBean

I got the magazines today. Monday 2-9. I want to thank you for your hard work and effort. We as writers can write all we want, but without dedicated publishers, we would fade away like the flowers kissed by the late fall frost gently but deadly. Thank you Victoria, and yea the mags looks super

If you haven't seen it yet, I've discovered a terrific magazine for writers of short stories and poems. Skyline is beautifully done, a literary magazine that reminds me of the New Yorker with more style. They have an online edition at Skylinemagazines.com and it is also available in print at locations nationwide, including all Books-a-Million bookstores. The submission process is fairly simple and the editor, Victoria, is great.

And I'm delighted to tell everyone that three of my poems have been selected for the March/April issue.

As a wily old marketing type from Disney, I'm also running a small ad for my novel, Waking Walt, which will appear on the page preceding the poems. J

Victoria Valentine is one of the most generous editors I have ever met. Not only is she responsive (which many busy editors are not), she also goes the extra mile to see that things get done right. Her magazine, Skyline, is top-notch! As a writer, I have never met someone quite as refreshing as Victoria. I admire her stamina, creativity, and willingness to help others. Her class act is something that hopefully many others will emulate in the publishing world!

This weekend, I read the Holiday Edition from cover to cover(almost). Love the intriguing layout style and diversity of writing styles. There's truely something for everyone who likes to read.

(Dear Friends)

Friends, you've got to love poetry to be a part of it.What else but a love of the art (and make no mistake about it poetry is art)Could explain endless hours spent on one poem--or even one line--squeezing it,rolling it,shaping it,into something that makes the connection between heart and paper via pen?Or driving an hour to stand with shaking knees behind the podium (or worse yet, just standing up in front of a group with no "prop"),to read one two-minute-or less long poem?Or sending out submission after submission in hopes of publication;not in payment, but in publication.
You've got to love something that gives such small repayment for devotion;the ink on a sheet of printed paper that spells out your heart with your name attached. And yet, friends,I've got to tell you this of writing poetry, just seeing a poem of mine in print, with my byline,is worth everything, nothing more
required.

Funny,isn't it?

Hi Victoria
Skyline has been delivered yesterday. This is so fine!
It's a wonderful issue, very beautiful. You did a good work.
I just had time to read "A moment in time" a nice story, indeed.
I recognized a few authors. Nathan Combs' pictures are fantastic. He's a good talent.
ET, France

Hello Victoria,

I am traveling but received the latest issue just before I left. I must tell you how impressed I am at the continual improvement of the magazine not only in its variety and presentation but in the high professional quality of its contributors. I am honored to be in such fine company. You deserve credit for your extraordinary efforts to bring this about.
Arthur Isaacson

I just received my ( wonderful ) magazines, thank you!
At first sight, I was literally captured by the paintings by Henry Peter ... they're exceptional!
You also did quite a good job with my poem and artworks on the back cover, for which I'm grateful to you.
I want to buy some more copies:...

I received the Jan/Feb. issue of Skyline Literary
Magazine yesterday and read it from cover to cover
without stopping. Today I went back and reread some
of the poetry. I enjoyed the issue thoroughly.

I'm spreading the word about your wonderful magazine.
I gave copies of the Dec. issue to all my family
members as gifts since my two stories were in it.
Today, I showed Skyline to one of the local college
instructors, who is in charge of the creative writing
club and continuing education at Coastal Bend College
in Beeville, Texas. She asked for the subscription
card inside. I gladly granted her request.

Your magazine has now inspired me to try my hand at
poetry. I wrote my first poem this week and included
it in my weekly column for the newspaper.

Keep up the good work with your outstanding magazine.
Everyone that I've shown it to has been very
impressed.

Jo Kreis, Texas

Now you have me at a loss for words. You were the first magazine to accept me in print form and I will never forget that. You have taken time out of your day each time I have wrote to you, offered me the experience of being the short-story contest judge last year and have provided invaluable support as a friend and editor. I am proud to be a supporter of Skyline and I always will be. The Jan/Feb issue arrived a few days ago and I am without words to the quality that Skyline Literary Magazine has become. From the cover artwork to the new paper its printed on, and certainly the quality of the content. I'm also thankful to you for never giving up as I know you fund this alone. The article "Helpful hints for stress relief" was informative and I have to say, realistic. Many magazines print things like that and have an "end all" approach to stress, here it acknowledges that stress is a normal part of life, but there are ways to combat it. Arthur Isaacson's article is wonderful and informative and a trip down memory lane for me. I was in Pompeii in August 1984 & June 1990 and walked to the top of Mt. Vesuvious (with a tour group). I was also fascinated with the Student Corner, I think you have given young writers a great opportunity and a start. I am thankful for your comments and support of my work as well. I am looking forward to submitting. I wish you all the best and prosperity in 2003! It really hasn't been that long Vic...August 2001 to now. You've brought Skyline a long way! :-)

RE, New Jersey

" I thank Victoria Valentine for superhuman effort to get Skyline and SpinningS into print. As a verteran of 30 years in print media - 5 in magazines - I know what she goes through. Victoria affords all neophyte (me) and pro writers a rare opportunity. And I thank the Skyline Judges, with the discernin' eyes of an eagle, for bestowing honor on Big Day. There are better writers than I in Skyline Publications - but I try to be a good stick-whittlin' storyteller...Ramon Collins"

I just wanted to let you know that my copy of Skyline
Literary Magazine that you mailed on Monday reached my
mail box today. I am very impressed with the layout
of the magazine as well as the materials used to
produce it. You have done a wonderful job. I am
thrilled to have my stories included in such an
impressive format.
JK - Texas

Excited to hear about the growing popularity of Skyline
Skyline belongs to all of us
Its like a child growing within our midst.
I look forward to that day when Skyline would cross and grow beyond the skyline of our expectations.
It would still cater to little known or unknown poets, artists, musicians, dramatists- a massive movement of such people brought together by Skyline for a common aesthetic experience.
I look forward to that day when Skyline poets and their works would be quoted in the biblograph of research thesis of students in contemporary english literature
I look forward to that day when another person on the street touched by a poem in Skyline, pens down his thoughts in stranger time.

*S* You've definitely got my support!

Just a note to say that the magazine is wonderful!. This is a wonderful publication. Keep up the good work!

I received my express mail package today. Thank You for everything. The autographed version of At the Stroke of Midnight is spectacular and I will read it on the subway.
The magazine is simply beautiful and I'm proud to be part of it. The cover is gorgeous and truly conveys the holiday spirit.
You have rekindled my smoldered creative spirit. What else can I say?

Skyline and Hudson reached me today, thank you.
I just skimmed the mags and and my impressions at first glance are quite good.
They're neatly printed and pleasing the eye. The lay-out is really captivating, excellent!

I'm glad to say that I've received December issue!
It was unexpectedly fast. You sent it 9th December -
I've received 17th! Just 8 days!
I see a well-illustrated high-quality magazine!
It was very pleasant to see my fairy tale in such beautiful issue. I've told my friends in USA and Great Britain about your magazine.
Thank you very much, Victoria!
I wish you and your magazine lots of real successes!
May God bless you!

The new edition looks great! Thank you for finding the illustrations for my stories -- it really peps the layout up. And I love the cover. A very sexy lady .

Just a note. Your magazine has become quite exceptional. I have purchased an ad--

MS Ohio. .

I get criticized for my involvement with Skyline because the editor asks for writers' support.
Necessitated by writer's who take their free copy and she never hears from them again. Chintzy.

You aren't going to make money in this business without a literary agent, preferably in NY. And an agent doesn't want to wade through a hope chest of short stories -- He/she wants to see tear sheets" or photo-copies of your published work from slick mags.

Skyline is a fine slick. I have friends and family who are
interested in my relatively new venture, so I order 5 or 6 extra copies.
Skyline mails the mags right to their homes.

I had an ol' editor tell me,
"Invest in yourself -- if you don't do it, don't expect others to."
Well, I bought a computer (Mac - YAY!), printer, cable modem and software. I work at home so there's electricity, water and phone bills. The house and equipment are insured and I pay taxes. I've invested in four online courses and several books written by unemployed Lit Majors.

Skyline asks writers to help out with a $25 class personal ad -- YOUR work, web page, etc. As I see it, Skyline acts as an agent by mailing to about 150 outlets, starting with the New York public library, in maybe 25 states. I, sure as hell, don't want to try that. Just think of the envelope and postage costs. I'm from Seattle and people can pick up Skyline at Barnes & Noble.

Invest in yourself -- if you don't do it, don't expect others to . . .

I've been showing my copy of Skyline at work
tonight and everyone loves it ! Thank you!
